PROJECT
OÁSIS PARA CRIANÇAS SURDAS: impulsionando direitos linguísticos
Anti-linguistic deprivation actions
History
(Actions against language deprivation)
The name of the project was conceived with the idea that all spaces need to be safe and accessible environments for deaf children where they can develop and play. It is important for children to have a constant sense of belonging in their community, so it is essential to think of spaces without a logic of possible islands, but that all spaces can welcome deaf children. Guerretta (2023) discusses the term dépaysée to address the common idea in deaf communities of feeling without a place, without a country. Deaf communities are greatly impacted by this feeling, given that they are made up of citizens of this country, but often do not feel seen as citizens with rights. The objective of our project is to work on a research program that studies the impacts of the deprivation of rights, especially linguistic rights, and participate in actions to co-construct changes to this situation.
In 2022, SOPA-Lab began a series of outreach actions via video, on its Instagram account @sopa_lab to start a dialogue about the need to expand spaces where libras is present. These actions fostered a project led by professors Clarissa Guerretta and Marília Lott as described below.
Libras for families of deaf children
The goal of the project is to encourage the use of sign language in the daily lives of families with deaf children so that the child has a full linguistic experience, being able to interact with their family and other people around them not only in daily routines, but also to talk about their desires, memories and expectations. We have already thought of different ways to achieve this goal, one of which is the creation of materials in sign language on themes related to children's routines, themes present in children's stories that can broaden the family's repertoire and encourage interaction and shared reading. We are interested in participating in proposals for a sign language course aimed at families of deaf children in the future. For now, we continue to study different proposals used in Brazil and abroad that can help us build actions that truly promote sign language within families.
