Lexical Access
Lexical access refers to the process by which individuals identify and retrieve the words that make up the vocabulary of a language. Thus, we can say that research on lexical access explores how humans organize, retrieve, understand and produce the words stored in their minds.

When we speak, hear or read a word, our brain needs to "find" that word quickly in our memory. You may ask yourself:

How fast is that?

What exactly are we looking for, the whole word or parts of it ( globalization x globo+al+izar+ção )?

If I hear a similar word, am I more likely to “choose” the wrong word ( ear x dark circle )?

Do people who speak more than one language confuse words more ( embaraçada x embarrassed x embarazada – words from Portuguese, English and Spanish, respectively)?
Research on lexical access is important to answer these and many other questions and, consequently, increase our understanding of the cognitive processing of language.
Our researches
As pesquisas sobre acesso lexical no SOPA-Lab são orientadas pela Professora Daniela Cid de Garcia, em parceria com o LAPEX (Laboratório de Psicolinguística Experimental), e se concentram em indivíduos bilíngues. Atualmente, estamos focados em dois grupos: bilíngues de português-mandarim e bilíngues de português-japonês. Esses estudos levam em consideração o conceito de biescrevência, isto é, a capacidade de um indivíduo usar e compreender duas formas de escrita distintas, e buscam oferecer insights sobre como o reconhecimento visual de palavras ocorre em contextos linguísticos não dominados pelo inglês, o que é indispensável para entendermos a diversidade linguística e cultural além dos grupos WEIRD.
